mid-course correction

i chose to give up chocolate for lent this year. since chocolate is one of my four food groups,  i thought it would be an appropriate choice. but my experience so far has been rather anticlimactic.

it occurred to me this morning, after participating in some of my favorite obsessive behaviors, that perhaps i need to adjust my lenten fast. instead of chocolate, maybe i need to give up (1.) re-playing conversations over and over again in my head and (2.)  looking at my ass in the mirror a thousand times a day to make sure it's still in the same zip code as the rest of me.

Miska,

I just read Lamott's Traveling Mercies chapter on "the aunties" last night, so your zipcode joke made me laugh even though you're smokin hot.

It sounds like eating chocolate + worrying less + learning to make peace with your body = successful lent season.

Your mama agrees that it is time to end both the affair with the mirror & the replay button. Bring on some chocolate! ;)

That's funny, Mom. You're right--it is an affair, an idolatrous affair, and it needs to STOP! =)

Erin, I love the chapter on the "aunties," too! It's one of my all-time favorite chapters by A.L.

Just so you know, I read this out loud to the house and we all laughed our skinny asses off!

Now that is the Miska I know. She says - Forget the surface-y crap of going through the motions. Let's enter the ugly places with honesty and talk about what's really going on. Yes, my friend.

"Repentance is a turning back, a going home" says Buechner in Godric. May your Lenten journey find you more at home in your own skin.

Miska, thanks for the comment over at the Shame. As I'm sure you know, words mean a lot.

Listen, ass-checking a thousand times a day is way too much, even during Lent. I personally check mine once in the morning; I just say "hola" and keep moving. Yes, my ass's love language is espanol. It's strange.

Be well.

Hi Miska.

Found your blog and I love it.

Can you believe it was 10 years ago we were gearing up to start our journey in the Master's in Counseling program at CCU? Where has the time gone. My family and I have lived in Charlotte, NC now for almost 4 years. I hope you, Winn and your family are doing well.
Warmly.
